Euphorbia trigona features upright, three-sided stems lined with small spines and leaves. Sculptural and easy to grow, this succulent thrives in bright light and prefers its soil to dry between waterings.
Euphorbia trigona – African Milk Tree
Euphorbia trigona is a succulent plant with a striking upright, architectural growth habit and is frequently mistaken for a cactus. Its fleshy stems typically have three pronounced sides, with small paired spines and leaves developing along the ridges of new growth.
As it matures, its stems branch to form an increasingly substantial, candelabra-like silhouette. Despite its cactus-like appearance, it belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family.
Light
Provide bright indirect light. Some direct sunlight can be beneficial when the plant is gradually acclimated to it. Abundant light encourages strong, balanced growth.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry completely or almost completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away. Reduce watering during periods of slower growth.
Care
Use a highly well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti and succulents. As the plant grows taller and heavier, a sufficiently stable pot can help keep large specimens upright. Avoid overwatering, as its roots are sensitive to prolonged moisture.
Good to know
Despite its appearance, Euphorbia trigona is not a cactus. Like other Euphorbia species, it produces a milky latex when damaged. The sap can be irritating and toxic: avoid contact with the skin and eyes, keep the plant away from children and pets, and wear gloves when pruning.
The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
