Dracaena marginata, or Madagascar Dragon Tree, features long, narrow dark green leaves edged in red. Slender and easy to grow, it thrives in bright indirect light and prefers the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Dracaena marginata – Madagascar Dragon Tree
Dracaena marginata is a tropical houseplant with a slender, architectural growth habit. Its long, narrow leaves are primarily dark green with fine red to purple margins, forming tufts at the top of stems that gradually become bare and woody as the plant matures.
Depending on how it is grown, it may be available with a simple, branched, staggered or trained form while retaining the characteristic foliage of Dracaena marginata.
Light
Provide bright indirect light to encourage dense, balanced growth. It also adapts well to medium light, although growth will generally be slower. Avoid intense direct sunlight.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess moisture drain away. Avoid keeping the soil consistently wet. Reduce watering frequency when growth slows.
Care
Dracaena marginata appreciates an airy, well-draining potting mix and relatively stable temperatures. It adapts well to typical indoor home and office conditions. Pruning the stems can encourage new branching and help control the plant’s height.
Good to know
Dracaena marginata is also botanically classified as Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia, although its traditional name remains widely used in horticulture. Braided, branched and other trained forms are different presentations of the same plant rather than separate cultivars. It is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
