Poinsettia – Christmas Star

The poinsettia is a holiday classic, loved for the colourful bracts surrounding the small flowers at the centre of the plant. From traditional red to white, pink and variegated selections, its vibrant foliage instantly brings a festive touch indoors.

With proper care, a poinsettia can maintain its colour for several weeks. It prefers a bright location protected from significant temperature fluctuations.

Light
Provide bright indirect light. Good light helps the plant maintain its colour and vigour throughout the holiday season.

Watering
Water when the surface of the potting mix begins to dry. Allow excess water to drain completely and avoid leaving the pot sitting in water, especially when it is placed inside decorative wrapping.

Care
Keep the plant at a stable indoor temperature, away from cold drafts, exterior doors and direct heat sources. Avoid allowing the foliage to rest against very cold windows.

Good to know
The colourful parts of a poinsettia are bracts, or modified leaves; the true flowers are the small structures found at their centre. Its sap can be irritating, and ingestion may cause digestive upset in pets, so it is best kept out of their reach.
