Maranta leuconeura – Red Prayer Plant
Red Maranta leuconeura is a tropical plant prized for its highly decorative foliage. Its leaves combine different shades of green, darker markings and distinctive red veins that create a striking contrast.
Its low, gently trailing growth habit allows it to spread gradually, making it equally attractive on a shelf or in a hanging planter.
Light
Provide bright indirect light. It tolerates more moderate light, but good light encourages fuller growth and helps maintain the foliage's colouring. Avoid intense direct sunlight.
Watering
Keep the potting mix slightly moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely for extended periods or keeping the roots consistently waterlogged.
Care
Maranta appreciates good ambient humidity and relatively stable temperatures. Use a rich, light and well-draining potting mix. It can be sensitive to highly mineralized water; filtered or low-mineral water may be preferable if leaf edges regularly turn brown.
Good to know
Maranta is commonly called a Prayer Plant because of the natural movement of its leaves, which may rise and change position between day and night. Colouring and patterns may vary slightly from plant to plant. It is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
