Hoya kerrii – Sweetheart Hoya

Hoya kerrii is instantly recognizable by its thick, green, heart-shaped leaves. This tropical climbing plant gradually develops long vines covered with its distinctive fleshy foliage.

Its relatively slow growth and graphic appearance make it an attractive houseplant, from compact young specimens to larger, more mature plants.

Light
Provide bright indirect light. Good light encourages stronger growth and may promote flowering. Some gentle direct sunlight can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged exposure to intense direct sun.

Watering
Allow the potting mix to dry considerably between waterings. Its thick leaves store water, making the plant more tolerant of slight dryness than consistently wet soil. Always allow excess water to drain freely.

Care
Use a light, highly well-draining potting mix. As it matures, Hoya kerrii develops a climbing or trailing habit and can be trained onto a trellis or support. Avoid removing old flower spurs after blooming, as the plant can flower again from the same structures.

Good to know
Young Hoya kerrii plants are sometimes sold as a single heart-shaped leaf planted in a small pot. A single leaf can remain alive for a long time without necessarily developing a new vine if it does not include a node. A cutting containing a node can continue growing and produce new leaves. Mature Hoya kerrii may also produce clusters of small, waxy, star-shaped flowers. Hoya plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
