Ficus lyrata – Fiddle Leaf Fig
Ficus lyrata is an iconic indoor plant recognized for its large, thick and glossy leaves, whose distinctive shape resembles a fiddle or lyre. Its substantial foliage and upright growth habit make it an excellent choice for adding height and a strong botanical presence to an interior.
Light
Provide bright indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle direct sunlight when gradually acclimated. Abundant light encourages vigorous growth and helps maintain dense foliage.
Watering
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain away. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet or allowing water to collect at the bottom of the pot.
Care
Use a rich, well-draining potting mix. Ficus lyrata appreciates stable conditions and may react to sudden changes in temperature, light or location. Occasionally wipe its large leaves to remove dust and rotate the plant regularly to encourage balanced growth.
Good to know
Native to tropical Africa, Ficus lyrata can develop into a large tree in its natural habitat. Indoors, its size can be managed through pruning, and it may be grown in different forms, including bush and tree forms. Its sap can be irritating, and the plant is toxic to pets if ingested.
The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
