Croton ‘Petra’ – Codiaeum variegatum ‘Petra’
Croton ‘Petra’ is a tropical houseplant renowned for its exceptionally colourful foliage. Its large, leathery leaves develop a changing mix of green, yellow, orange and red highlighted by strongly contrasting veins. As the plant matures, its stems become woody, gradually giving it the appearance of a small tropical shrub.
Light
Provide very bright light. A few hours of gentle direct sunlight can be beneficial once the plant is gradually acclimated. Generous light encourages stronger coloration, while insufficient light may result in predominantly green foliage.
Watering
Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess moisture drain away. Avoid both prolonged drought and consistently saturated soil.
Care
Croton ‘Petra’ appreciates warmth, good ambient humidity and rich, airy, well-draining soil. It prefers relatively stable conditions and may respond to sudden changes in temperature, light or location by temporarily dropping some leaves.
Good to know
New leaves may initially emerge mostly green before gradually developing their yellow, orange and red coloration. Colour intensity varies according to light, leaf maturity and growing conditions. Croton’s milky sap can cause irritation, and the plant is toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
