Crassula ovata – Jade Plant

Crassula ovata, commonly known as the Jade Plant, is a succulent with a naturally branching growth habit. Its thick, glossy oval leaves store water, while its stems gradually become woody with age, eventually giving the plant the appearance of a small tree.

Light
Provide very bright light. Crassula ovata appreciates several hours of direct sunlight once gradually acclimated. Good light encourages compact growth and sturdy stems.

Watering
Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess moisture drain away. Reduce watering frequency when growth slows. As with most succulents, excess moisture poses a much greater risk than a brief dry period.

Care
Use a very well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti and succulents. The plant can be pruned to control its shape and encourage branching. Occasionally rotating the pot can also help maintain more balanced growth.

Good to know
Over time, a Jade Plant can develop a substantial trunk and take on the appearance of a small succulent tree. Under favourable conditions and once sufficiently mature, it may also produce clusters of small, star-shaped white to pale pink flowers. Crassula ovata is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.

The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
