Araucaria heterophylla – Norfolk Island Pine
Araucaria heterophylla, commonly known as Norfolk Island pine, is a tropical conifer prized as a houseplant for its elegant, symmetrical silhouette. Its tiered branches are covered in fine, soft foliage, creating its characteristic airy appearance.
Light
It thrives in bright indirect light and can benefit from some gentle direct sunlight. Good light encourages regular growth and helps maintain its dense, symmetrical habit. Rotating the plant occasionally can also encourage even growth.
Watering
Water when the surface of the soil begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain away. Avoid allowing the growing medium to dry completely for extended periods, but never leave the roots in waterlogged soil. Reduce watering slightly when growth slows.
Care
Norfolk Island pine appreciates good ambient humidity, relatively stable temperatures and an airy, well-draining growing medium. Protect it from cold drafts, very dry air and sudden environmental changes. Avoid cutting the main growing tip, as it determines the plant’s vertical growth and characteristic shape.
Good to know
Despite its common name, Norfolk Island pine is not a true pine of the genus Pinus. Native to Norfolk Island in the Pacific, Araucaria heterophylla can develop into an impressive tree in its natural environment, while its growth remains much more limited when grown indoors in a container.
The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. The plant is sold in its nursery pot.
