Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’ – Lipstick Plant
Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’ is a tropical trailing plant prized for its glossy green foliage and colourful blooms. Its tubular red flowers emerge from darker buds, resembling a tube of lipstick and giving the plant its distinctive common name.
Light
It thrives in bright, indirect light, which is particularly important for encouraging abundant blooms. It can tolerate moderate light conditions but may produce fewer flowers. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense direct sunlight.
Watering
Allow the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess water drain away. Avoid keeping the soil consistently wet. Reduce watering slightly when growth slows.
Care
Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’ appreciates warmth, moderate humidity and an airy, well-draining growing medium. Its naturally trailing growth makes it particularly well suited to shelves, elevated furniture and hanging containers. Overly long stems can be trimmed as needed to maintain fuller growth.
Good to know
The Lipstick Plant gets its common name from its tubular flowers, which emerge from darker buds and resemble a tube of lipstick. Good light and relatively stable growing conditions help encourage flowering.
